From The Advertiser, Tuesday 28 August 1934:

" DEATH OF MR. A. W. PELZER

City Gardener For 32 Years
Mr. August William Pelzer, for 32 years Adelaide City Gardener, died suddenly last night at his home, Rose terrace, Wayville. He was 72 years of age. Mr. Pelzer had previously appeared in good health, but collapsed after his evening meal, from a heart attack. He retired from his position as city gardener two years ago. He was appointed in 1899.
"Under Mr. Pelzer's supervision, the work of laying out Adelaide's many municipal gardens was extraordinarily well done." said the Lord Mayor (Mr. Cain) last right. Mr Pelzer, he said, was one of Australia's leading authorities on landscape gardening. After his retirement, his services had been retained by the City Council in an advisory capacity - He was recently engaged on the arrangement of the decorations for the Mayoral Ball.

Mr. Pelzer leaves a widow, a son, Malcolm, and a daughter, Greta." [1]

From The News, Tuesday 28 August 1934:

" ADDED TO BEAUTY OF CITY

Tributes to Mr. Pelzer
Regret was expressed in civic circles today at-the sudden death last night of Mr. A. W. Pelzer, who was city gardener for more than 30 years.
This afternoon the Lord Mayor (Mr. Cain), members of the council, and council officials attended the funeral.
Mr. A. A. Simpson, a former Mayor of Adelaide, who is now president of the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce, said that Mr. Pelzer was one of the most valued citizens the State had known.
"He added infinitely to the beauty of our city," said Mr. Simpson, "and was probably the best city gardener Australia had known.
"He was acquainted with every detail and every art of landscape gardening, and had given valuable help and instruction to the gardeners of other cities."

Mr. Pelzer. was 72 years of age, and has left a widow, a son, Malcolm, and a daughter, Greta." [2]
