Andreas and Wilhelmine arrived at Port Adelaide on 26 January 1846 aboard the George Washington, the first of three ships with German migrants to arrive that year, the start of the second wave of Germans arriving in South Australia. Their travelling companions included a group of Hanoverian Pietists lead by Johann Friedrich Borgelt, and the Hartig brothers. Less than a month after their arrival. Andreas was able to present his basketmaking skills at the Agricultural and Horticultual Society Exhibition, winning a prize. [1] In his short time here Andreas had begun experimenting with the local tea tree (leptospermum).
